JukeBox: On-Demand and Podcasting

JukeBox Overview: Podcasting and on-demand overview(pdf).

JukeBox File Types
JukeBox will accept the following on demand audio and video formats:

  • Audio Formats: wma and wmv (Windows Media), mp3. (NOTE: mp3 format files are downloadable and podcastable.)
  • Video formats: wmv, .m4v, .mp4, and .mov (NOTE: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov format files are downloadable and podcastable.)

You can load media into JukeBox via a NewsRoom or Arts article, or by FTPing directly to the media server.

JukeBox Podcast File Formatting
When podcasting in JukeBox, we recommend that you upload mp3 format files.

While you can podcast other file formats, some podcasting software, including iTunes, will only accept MP3 format. Many audio editing programs such as Cool Edit and Sound Forge include mp3 option.

Converting (or encoding) from .wav, Windows Media or other formats is quick, you can use a number of free programs such as the following:

Tips:

  • Naming: When naming your files, do not use spaces or special characters.
  • Encoding rate: We recommend encoding these files at a lower bit rate of 24-64 kbps, this will allow your users to download files more quickly  and result in lower bandwidth usage for the station. Keep in mind people listen on computer speakers, head phones so higher quality is not appreciated.
  • Station ID: It's also a good idea to include a station ID and program ID within the audio file.

Naming Files and Directories

When naming your audio or video files or creating FTP directories or folders, do not include any spaces or special characters. We recommend simple, lowercase letters.

  • Please only use alphanumeric characters
  • No spaces, punctuation, or other special characters (no apostrophes, @, &, #, *, etc.)
  • Lowercase only strongly recommended
  • No spaces (yes, we listed that twice)

For example:

  • file_name.mp3(CORRECT)
  • this-is-myfile-name.mp3 (CORRECT)
  • file name.mp3 (INCORRECT)
  • that's my file name.mp3 (INCORRECT)

If you've already FTP'd a file or created a directory, you should be able to update that easily using your FTP software, no need to re-upload files.

Searching the Media Manager

Searching:

  • Log in to Juke Administration Tools Index and click on Manage all Media.
  • In the search box, Type the name of file or include the full date written in the form of MM/DD/YYYY or MM/DD/YY.
  • NOTE: In order for your search to be successful, type dates in MM/DD/YYYY or MM/DD/YY format, separating terms with dashes only. It is also possible to limit search by including terms like before, after, or between in your search.
  • Click Search to generate results.

Manage all Media organizes and displays search results by the files that are most fitting to the terms in the search. While the results initially appear according to the terms used, they are also organized by the most recent date in which the media files were added, and they are ordered from larger to smaller sizes. With a simple Click of the Arrows (▲▼) from each column that organizes the search results, these settings may be altered for your convenience.

File Name ▼: By clicking on ▲, file name results are organized in alphabetic order from top-to-bottom.  When selecting ▼, the list of results appears from the bottom.

Date ▼: With a Click of ▲, the results order by most recent dates, while the ▼ displays files added at a later date.

Size ▼:   The ▲ option lists the files that are largest in size, while the ▼ icon has the results appear in a listing of smallest to largest sized files.

Module ▼: Using either the ▲ or ▼, the listing can be alternated in alphabetical order by the modules or the sections in which the media appears on your website.

Dealing with Large News or Arts Media Files

Excluding 1 hour programs, your audio files should always be under 15 MB (video will always be much larger). If not, you may wish to check your encoding settings first. Files should be encoded at 32kbps, with the max rate of 64kbps.

If your file is still larger than 15 MB, you may find that you cannot publish the audio through your Add Article tool. In this case, you will need publish your article without the audio, FTP audio to our media server, and then associate the two using your JukeBox Media Manager.

1. http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/xxxx/arts.artsadmin  (or news.newsadmin) Add new article, but DO NOT add the audio here. Save the URL of the article for step 5.

2. FTP the audio file directly to our media server using an FTP program such as Filezilla or CuteFTP:

3.  Browse your desktop and upload your file into the 'arts' directory (or 'news'), or drag and drop the file onto the browser window.  There is no limit to file sizes, but be aware that files larger than 10 MB may load slowly.  *NOTE*: For very large files, you may have to wait up to 15 minutes after FTP transfer before "Adding Meta Data"and generating links.

4. Adding Metadata: After you've FTP'd a file, log on to your JukeBox admin toolset:
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/xxxx/ondemand.ondemandadmin   substitute your call letters

  • Click "Add Metadata".  You should see the files you just uploaded. If  you don't see your file, note that for very large files, you may have to wait up to 15 minutes after FTP transfer before "Adding Meta Data"and generating links.
  • Add the appropriate metadata for the file.

5. Click "Manage All Media". Next to the desired file, click 'article' link in the right column.

A window will pop up. Paste the URL for the arts article your published earlier into this field (see step 1). Click go. This associates the audio with the article, and you should now see the audio links on your article.

6. Updating your podcast feed: Podcast feeds will update automatically 8 times a day, so you can stop here and be done with it.  If you want the piece to be added to the podcast feed immediately, log on to your JukeBox admin toolset:
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/xxxx/ondemand.ondemandadmin
